At The Mary Bassett Lower School we have always encouraged children to read and write for pleasure and purpose. Our aim is that children leave our school with an ability to record their thoughts, knowledge and ideas using different writing styles. We also want them to have the confidence to clearly communicate to a range of audiences using spoken language. Finally we want them to access the written word in the world around them to gain new knowledge and understanding, as well as for enjoyment in their free time.
For many years we have been proud of our active library, reading volunteers and early literacy interventions to raise the standard of reading, writing and spoken language for the children at our school. We also run reading, writing and public speaking competitions and challenges throughout the academic year.
Our updated English plans fully reflect the new National Curriculum which was introduced in 2014.
The overview of what is taught in each year group is detailed below. Please click on the links for the information you need. Reading, writing and spoken language skills are evident in all subject areas of the national curriculum and links to year group topics and themes are utilised at every opportunity to embed the key skills of English.
If you have any queries regarding how any aspect of English is taught in your child’s year group then please contact your class teacher in the first instance.
English teaching at The Mary Bassett Lower School is coordinated by Mr Kristian Hewitt (writing), Miss Rosie Thompson (writing) and Mrs Stephanie Finniss (reading).

Below you can find a folder containing documents that tell you exactly what we cover in Maths in each year group and how we teach it. By law, your child must be taught everything in the curriculum for their Key Stage by the end of the Key Stage, but we have the freedom to swap content to different year groups within that Key Stage. The Lower and Middle Schools in the local area have agreed together what we will teach in Lower School and what will be taught in Middle School. I hope you find the documents useful. The Calculation Policy should be helpful in explaining how your child will be recording their Maths.
