Special Educational Needs & Disabilities (SEND)

At The Mary Bassett Lower School we aim to inspire children with a broad and balanced curriculum regardless of their level of ability or additional need. We work flexibly to take account of the many different barriers to learning children may have in order to allow all children the same opportunity to achieve their full potential. We have high expectations for all the children in our care and believe very strongly in the early identification of any additional needs that children may have which might prevent them achieving the best that they can.

At our school we scaffold lessons in a variety of ways to improve access to learning for all. In addition the class teachers and Senior Leadership Team have a system of regular close monitoring to ensure that children make the best progress they can.

When a class teacher has concerns about your child’s progress they will always contact you as parents and carers and may then involve the school SENDCo (Special Educational Needs and Disability Co-ordinator).

The Mary Bassett Lower School fully reflects the reforms of the new Code of Practice which came into force in September 2014 as well as Central Bedfordshire’s Graduated Response guidance. In addition we have an extra level of monitoring and support called an ‘Initial Cause for Concern and raises the profile of children needing extra support to achieve their best. It is a short term measure to intervene early with appropriate support and is not part of the official SEND register. It reflects our belief in the benefits of early identification.

If you have any concerns about your child’s additional needs, progress or any other issues your first port of call should always be your child’s class teacher as they will know them best.

You may also wish to contact Stephanie Finniss, the school SENDCo, who is available for appointments each morning as well as after school. Please contact the School Office in person, or call 01525 373017, or email office@marybassett.co.uk
