Keeping in the loop - Mary Bassett Learning Themes
Over the course of this academic year we will guide all pupils through a rich and varied curriculum, designed specifically to meet their needs and represent the views of children, staff and parents & carers.
It is important to us that you feel involved and aware of the concepts and knowledge your child will be exploring. To help with this process we have designed a new ‘Curriculum Map’ that will provide you with a quick way of seeing what learning is happening and how all subject areas are woven into this experience.
If you feel you want more detail about the specific content of learning this year you will find available to you a document called “Weaving Knowledge & Skills”, which specifies more precisely the expectations for your child based on their Year group (Years 1 -4).
All documents for this academic year are already available for you to view within the Class Pages on the School Website, by following this link below:
The curriculum at The Mary Bassett Lower School is based around a number of learning themes. Each year group plans themes across the year that allow children to achieve skill and knowledge objectives in core and foundation subjects. Central to each theme are one or more high quality texts that serve as a significant learning point to not only develop reading and writings skills, but inspire curiosity to explore ideas and themes resulting from the key text. Learning provision supports children through a broad range of experiences in order to inspire their learning and promote understanding of the world beyond their current life experiences. This will include trips, events and experiences that enhance and inspire learning around the theme. In addition, each year group plans curriculum learning and experiences to support the specific needs of their current cohort, planning carefully for the developmental priorities of the children.
Subject leaders monitor the learning opportunities and outcomes children experience in their subject area. They support the development of their subject to ensure a progressive journey for children in core and foundation subjects during their time in our school.
Our curriculum design is enhanced with research-led practice that is supported by a number of external organisations. These include:
