At The Mary Bassett Lower School we have always encouraged children to read and write for pleasure and purpose. We want children to access quality, innovative and relevant texts to support them to explore the world around them, to gain new knowledge and understanding, as well as for enjoyment in their free time. Our aim is that children leave our school with an ability to record their thoughts, knowledge and ideas using different writing styles. We also want them to have the confidence to clearly communicate to a range of audiences using spoken language.
For many years we have been proud of our active library, reading volunteers and early literacy interventions to raise the standard of reading, writing and spoken language for the children at our school. We also run reading, writing and public speaking competitions and challenges throughout the academic year.
The overview of texts explored and children's linked learning outcomes are detailed in the theme maps for each year group, displayed on the year group pages. Please click on the links for the information you need. Reading, writing and spoken language skills are evident in all subject areas of the national curriculum and links to year group topics and themes are utilised at every opportunity to embed the key skills of English. The progression of children's skills and knowledge in reading and writing are outlined in Learning Scales produced by the Centre for Literacy in Primary Education (CLPE). If you have any queries regarding how any aspect of English is taught in your child’s year group then please contact your class teacher in the first instance.
English teaching at The Mary Bassett Lower School is coordinated by Mrs Anne Mason (writing) and Mrs Katie Skerrett (reading).
