The curriculum at The Mary Bassett Lower School is based around a number of Learning Themes. Each Year Group Team plans themes across the year that allow children to achieve skills, knowledge and attitudes related to a full range of disciplines.
Central to each theme are one or more high quality texts that serve as a significant learning point to not only develop reading and writings skills, but inspire curiosity to explore ideas and themes resulting from the key text. Learning provision supports children through a broad range of experiences in order to inspire their learning and promote understanding of the world beyond their current life experiences. This will include trips, events and experiences that enhance and inspire learning around the theme.
In addition, each Year Group Team plans learning experiences to support the specific needs of their current cohort, planning carefully for the established and emerging developmental priorities of the children.
Subject leaders monitor the learning opportunities and outcomes children experience in their subject area. They support the development of their subject to ensure a progressive journey for children in core and foundation subjects during their time in our school.
The core range of concepts covered in each year group can be found below. Please bear in mind that teachers plan for children to make links across the curriculum in the most engaging way, when planning Learning Themes. This means that this document doesn't represent a chronological method for introducing concepts or the full depth at which they are studied. More information about which concepts are explored in each Learning Theme, please visit the Class Pages or Subject Pages of the website.
